Apple and Hermès unveil dive-ready Ultra 4 watch

Apple and Hermès unveil dive-ready Ultra 4 watch - apple hermès watch
The Ultra 4 launch follows eleven years of Apple‑Hermès partnership.

The Apple Watch Hermès Ultra 4 and Series 12 mark the deepest collaboration yet between the tech giant and the luxury brand, blending functionality with heritage in ways neither would attempt alone. After eleven years of partnership, the two have finally aligned not just on design but on what the product should do—a rare moment of harmony in a relationship where one side obsesses over the future and the other refuses to forget the past.

The Ultra 4 is the boldest experiment yet, taking Hermès into uncharted territory: underwater. The 49mm titanium case (grade 5) and sapphire crystal front resist water to 100 meters, though Apple officially rates it for recreational dives up to 40 meters. Beyond basic water resistance, it adds dual-frequency GPS (L1 + L5), a depth gauge for 40 meters, and a water temperature sensor—features that could satisfy divers without sacrificing Hermès’ aesthetic.

Where the watch becomes distinctly Hermès is in the details. The new Grand H bracelet, made of titanium, isn’t just a geometric statement—it’s adjustable with a precision mechanism that lets users wear it directly on skin or over a wetsuit. The solution is deceptively simple: no clunky buckles, no fuss. Just a quiet upgrade to practicality that feels effortless, a hallmark of modern luxury.

The Fathom & Wonder dial takes this further. Four visual modes—Surface, Midwater I, Midwater II, and Seabed—shift in real time as the wearer descends, with deepening blues, guiding lines, and subtle orange accents emerging from the dark. The Digital Crown lets users handle these depths graphically, turning data into an experience rather than a cold metric. It’s a rare case where functionality doesn’t come at the cost of elegance.

Meanwhile, the Series 12 stays closer to dry land, offering 42mm and 46mm titanium cases in Radiant Gold and Silver. Here, Hermès doubles down on its roots. The Rocabar Club strap mimics equestrian tack with knit stitching and a bold H motif, a nod to Hermès’ 1837 origins as a harness maker. The En selle cuff, in contrast, is a sleek leather band secured with the brand’s signature Étrivière buckle, a design element that predates smartwatches by centuries.

This tension, Apple’s relentless push toward health, AI, and activity tracking versus Hermès’ insistence on craftsmanship and history, has defined their partnership. The Ultra 4 and Series 12 prove the collaboration works best when they meet in the middle: Apple provides the tools, Hermès refines the purpose. The result isn’t just a watch. It’s proof that luxury today isn’t about ignoring the past or chasing the next big thing. It’s about making both coexist.

The Series 12 alone won’t change the smartwatch market, but the Ultra 4’s underwater focus could carve out a niche for Apple in a segment dominated by Garmin and Suunto. For Hermès, the move expands its digital footprint without diluting its identity. Eleven years in, the partnership still feels fresh, not because it’s breaking new ground, but because it’s finally doing what it does best: balancing opposing forces into something neither could achieve alone.
