Bangladesh’s prime minister called on Japan to increase investment in the country’s information and communication technology (ICT), renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing industries, emphasizing strong potential for foreign direct investment (FDI) and public-private partnerships (PPPs). The appeal was made during a Tokyo meeting with Masumi Kakinoki, who leads Marubeni Corporation and the Japan-Bangladesh Committee for Commercial and Economic Cooperation (JBCCEC).

Bangladesh’s government has committed to establishing a business-friendly climate, including regulatory adjustments and faster approval procedures, to draw in Japanese companies. Kakinoki indicated confidence that the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) between the two nations could help expand bilateral trade, increase Japanese investment and create new business opportunities.

Tarique Rahman also asked for Japanese backing to upgrade the Karnaphuli Fertiliser Company Limited (KAFCO) and investigate a second fertilizer production facility. He requested help from Marubeni and JBCCEC in developing the Bangladesh Special Economic Zone (BSEZ).

Earlier, in a Dhaka meeting on October 11, a Marubeni team headed by President and CEO Masayuki Omoto explored ways to expand investments in ICT, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, fertilizer production, and energy sectors. The prime minister arrived in Tokyo on a four-day state visit.
