In the heart of Umbria, perched on the Valnerina hills, the Relais Castello di Postignano is a medieval village brought back to life. Architects Gennaro Matacena and Matteo Scaramella led a meticulous restoration, preserving its historical essence. This project, rooted in philological research, aimed to maintain the village’s medieval layout while integrating modern comforts, ensuring a seamless blend of past and present.
A Medieval Gem Revived
The village, hailed by American architect Norman F. Carver Jr. as the archetype of Italian hill towns, now features suites ranging from 60 to 200 square meters. Each suite blends medieval elements like oak beams and terracotta bricks with modern touches, including custom furniture and contemporary art. At night, the terraces offer breathtaking views of the Valnerina, where the stars seem infinite, creating a serene atmosphere that complements the historical surroundings.
An elevator connects the road to the village, where rosemary, aromatic herbs, and geraniums line the narrow streets. The reception displays vintage tomato sauce bottles found in local farmers’ homes, adding a touch of history. From the terrace, visitors can admire the valley traversed by the Nera River, which originates in the Monti Sibillini, further enhancing the village’s connection to its natural and historical context.

Cultural and Artistic Hub
The Giardino delle Rose offers a tranquil retreat, while the SS. Annunziata church hosts cultural events. The Un Castello all’orizzonte program features exhibitions, classical music, opera, jazz, and book presentations. Recent restorations revealed 15th-century frescoes, including a Crucifixion scene, and the church’s acoustics make it ideal for recordings. Artists, writers, and musicians find inspiration in this setting, contributing to the village’s lively cultural life.
From September 11 to 13, the Postignano Music Festival returns for its third edition. Directed by Luigi Piovano, the festival spans genres from Mozart to David Bowie, with performances by the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. The program also includes works by Schubert, Piazzolla, Saint-Saëns, Debussy, and film scores, introduced by Enrico Ducrot, CEO of Viaggi dell’Elefante, who promotes the festival as part of exclusive travel experiences.
Living History and Local Flavors
Recognized by UNESCO for its cultural and environment preservation, the village includes properties for sale starting at €300,000. Residents and guests share amenities like a library, game room, and billiards. The La Casa Rosa trattoria serves local dishes, including black piglet with misticanza, truffle-topped stracciata, and handmade gnocchi with trout ragù. The menu also features the Crescionda di Spoleto, a soft cake with dark chocolate and amaretti, showcasing the region’s culinary traditions. Cooking classes and chef’s table experiences are available, allowing visitors to engage directly with local culinary practices.
