A glacial collapse on Wednesday caused seismic activity and catastrophic downstream impacts in Nepal and Tibet, leaving more than 1,000 foreign and local tourists missing. The disaster has resulted in at least 165 deaths, with many more feared dead as entire riverside communities and settlements were wiped out or submerged in at least six districts.
The US Geological Survey explained that the disaster was instead a glacial collapse and debris flow that caused subsequent catastrophic impacts downstream. This event was initially reported as an earthquake, but further analysis revealed that no earthquake had occurred.
Nepali officials reported that more than 460 tourists were missing, including 393 foreigners from countries such as India, the United States, Australia, and Britain. Chinese officials stated that at least 558 people were missing in Tibet’s Gyirong County near the border, including 260 foreigners.
State news agency Xinhua reported significant casualties, although the toll on the Chinese side was only three at the time of writing. Dramatic video footage emerged from security cameras on the Chinese side of the Nepal-Tibet border, showing a massive wave of water and mud sweeping through towns along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers.
The Nepali military has sent more than a dozen helicopters to rescue survivors off rooftops, while China has deployed over 570 rescue personnel to help survivors at evacuation zones and restore services in the border area. They have also received $500,000 in emergency assistance from the United States.

Climate experts at the Kathmandu-based International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development believe a glacier avalanche was the likely cause of the flood. The group said river water levels rose by up to nine meters in half an hour at the height of the flood.
Nepal and China have launched major search and rescue operations on both sides of the border, deploying military forces, helicopters, and special emergency teams to reach those affected by the disaster.
