Aurivo Co-operative Society has appointed JP McGrath as its next chief executive, starting in late September. He will replace Donal Tierney, who is retiring after 15 years with the Sligo-based agricultural co-op, including seven as CEO.
McGrath arrives from Dairygold, where he served as chief financial officer and contributed to the co-op’s long-term strategy. Prior to that, he spent five years at Bord na Móna—first as CFO, then as chief operating officer—overseeing its transition from peat production to renewable energy.
His career includes leadership roles at Norbrook Laboratories and Aryzta. At Aryzta, he managed a €1.1 billion division spanning 14 countries in Europe and Asia Pacific. A chartered accountant, McGrath holds a degree in International Commerce with French from University College Dublin.
“I am honoured to have been appointed Chief Executive of Aurivo,” he said. “I look forward to working with the Board, the leadership team, employees, members and customers to build on the strong foundations established under Donal’s leadership.”
Board chair Cathal Garvey stated that McGrath’s background in business transformation and operational management made him an ideal choice. “His broad experience across the food, agri-business and energy sectors will be valuable as Aurivo develops,” Garvey said.
Garvey also acknowledged outgoing CEO Donal Tierney, praising his leadership “with integrity, dedication and a clear focus on the long-term interests of the Co-op and its members.”
The co-op, which processes dairy, beef and grains, is adjusting to shifting market conditions and sustainability demands. While it has increased investments in renewable energy, its core operations remain tied to traditional agriculture.
McGrath’s experience in guiding businesses through change may help. The immediate priority seems to be stable leadership rather than rapid transformation.
His appointment comes as co-operatives in Ireland face rising costs, regulatory challenges, and the need to engage younger farmers. Balancing these pressures with Aurivo’s community focus will be a key task.
McGrath’s background in agricultural co-ops positions him to address these issues. The co-op’s future direction will depend on how well he handles the competing demands of tradition and innovation.
