Kakao Bank has rolled out specialized financial services for expatriates living in South Korea via the same application its domestic client base uses. This initiative seeks to eliminate disparities in digital access for the country’s expanding foreign demographic.

The initial phase permits qualified residents to establish accounts, order debit cards, and execute international transfers via the mobile platform. The bank intends to broaden this offering to encompass savings, lending, and other products currently available to locals.

Streamlined banking for foreign residents

International clients can create accounts on their phones in roughly five minutes and upload necessary paperwork directly through the application. The procedure is even quicker than the seven minutes required for Korean customers in 2017.

The starting selection features checking accounts, joint accounts, and SafeBox, an interest-bearing vault for temporary fund storage. Transactions at ATMs and transfers are complimentary, and domestic cards provide identical cashback perks as those given to Korean nationals.

Regarding international money transfers, Kakao Bank has teamed up with Hanpass, a Korean remittance provider servicing 200 countries and 50-plus currencies. Users can sign up and send funds without exiting the Kakao Bank app, with transfer fees waived for specific destinations, including the US and China.

Tailored features and security measures

The platform incorporates tools catering to the specific requirements of foreign residents. Customers can obtain balance and transaction certificates required for visa renewals and receive government alerts, including fine notifications.

Users can check balances converted into nine currencies and utilize AI-powered search and transfer tools, alongside the bank’s rewards system. AI translation is supported in English, Chinese, and Vietnamese, while English-speaking support staff are available for consultations.

To enhance safety, Kakao Bank has implemented measures for foreign users, including the tracking of residence validity periods and facial verification. Additional protections against fraudulent text messages and identity theft are also provided.

Closing the service gap

Leveraging its current infrastructure enabled the bank to make more than 50 financial and lifestyle services accessible to foreign residents at launch. The institution plans to introduce savings products, open banking, and loan comparison tools in 2027, while increasing language support from three to seven languages.

International debit card payments are set to debut in early December. Kakao Bank’s ultimate objective is to grant foreign residents the same convenient financial tools and advantages enjoyed by its domestic clientele.
